How to Run a Reddit AMA for Your Veterinary Practice and Get Found Locally

Pet owner question bubbles directed towards Reddit answer bubble
A step-by-step guide for veterinary practice owners on setting up and hosting a Reddit AMA that brings in local pet owners.

Most veterinary practices pull their clients from a 5 to 15 mile radius. A veterinary business is hyper-local, and hyper-local activities resonate with their audience, build community, and make their business known in local search. You are not competing for national attention; you are competing for the pet owner two neighborhoods over who is currently asking strangers on the internet where to take their dog.

That question gets asked constantly on Reddit. Someone posts “just moved here, need a vet reccomendation” in their city’s subreddit, and 60 people answer. If your practice never comes up, that’s not only the 60 who are engaged in the post, but the hundreds who viewed it, and the AI search engines who have indexed that answer and may feature it as a citation in their own response.

An AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) is one of the few formats where a business owner can show up on Reddit and be welcomed instead of downvoted. Done right, a veterinary AMA puts your name, your expertise, and your veterinary clinic in front of a few hundred or thousand local pet owners over a week, and stays indexed for life. In this guide from Vetcelerator, we’ll show you how to do it.

Why Reddit Belongs in a Hyper-Local Marketing Plan

Before starting, let’s get into three reasons a veterinary Reddit AMA is worth your Saturday morning.

City subreddits are genuinely local.

r/Knoxville is people who live in Knoxville. There is no targeting to configure and no wasted impressions on a market your veterinary clinic doesn’t serve.

Reddit threads rank in Google.

Search “best vet in [your city]” and you will almost certainly see a Reddit thread on page one. When AI search tools summarize local recommendations, they pull from those same threads. A strong AMA becomes a permanent, searchable asset with your practice name in it.

Recommendations from Reddit carry weight.

Pet owners trust a vet who answered forty questions for free more than they trust a boosted Facebook post. This is relationship building with your community, and it works if done consistently over time. You are telling people you exist and showing them why you’re worth visiting.

Bonus Reason: Whatever business you think you’re in, consider you’re also in the “advice business.” A pet owner is going to get the information from somewhere. Ideally, your veterinary practice is a big part of that mosaic. If they aren’t getting the advice from you, they are getting it elsewhere.

Step 1: Find Your Local Subreddit

Start here, because not every town has one worth posting in.

Search Reddit directly.

Go to reddit.com and search your city name. Try a few variations: [City], [City][State], [Metro area], and your county name. Minneapolis has r/Minneapolis and r/TwinCities. Smaller towns often live inside a regional sub instead.

Check the subscriber count and the activity.

A subreddit with 40,000 members and three posts a week is a ghost town. A sub with 8,000 members and thirty posts a day is where you can expect actual responses to your post. Sort by “New” and see how recently people are commenting, see the topics they are commenting on, and how many comments per post are occurring.

Look for the adjacent subs, too.

Many markets have a pet-specific local community, a neighborhood-level sub, or a university-town sub. r/[City]Pets or r/[Neighborhood] can be smaller but far more relevant.

Read the rules before anything else.

Every subreddit publishes its own rules in the sidebar (on mobile, tap “See more” or the “About” tab). You are looking for three things:

  • Does the sub allow self-promotion at all or only in a weekly thread?
  • Is there a minimum account age or karma requirement to post?
  • Do they have a stated policy on AMAs? Many city subs love them and have hosted local firefighters, brewers, and city council members.

If the sub bans business posts outright, don’t try to sneak around it. Moderators in city subs are volunteers who live in your town, and they have long memories. Find the sub that welcomes you instead.

Step 2: Set Up Your Reddit Account

Use a personal account, not a clinic account.

This is the single most common mistake. An account named “OakRidgeAnimalHospital” reads as a brand megaphone and gets treated like one. People don’t appreciate the inherent promotion of your post when you are your practice. Instead, an account named something like “DrJenVet” or even just your first name and a pet reference performs better, gets more engagement, and survives moderation.

You will disclose your affiliation clearly in the AMA post itself. That’s the honest version, and it’s the version that works.

On reddit.com, click Sign Up, and use an email you’ll actually check. Pick your username carefully because you cannot change it later. Skip the “suggested username” Reddit throws at you.

Fill out your profile.

Add a photo of you or you with a pet and write a one-line bio like, “Veterinarian in [City]. 12 years in small animal practice.” This is what people click when they’re deciding whether to trust your answer.

Verify your email.

Unverified accounts get filtered by automated moderation tools in a lot of subs.

Step 3: Warm Up the Account Before You Ask for Anything

Do not create an account on Monday and post an AMA on Tuesday. It will be removed, and you’ll have burned your one clean introduction to that community.

Reddit’s site-wide guidance is often described as the 90/10 rule: roughly 90% of your activity should be genuine participation and no more than 10% should involve your own business. Plenty of city subs enforce something stricter. On top of that, most subreddits run automated filters with karma and account-age minimums that are deliberately not published.

Give yourself 30 days of ordinary use before the AMA.

You need to do this step to be successful. Otherwise, it would be like telling someone your favorite restaurant recommendations and then they find out you moved to town yesterday. Commenting builds karma, which builds credibility. Have some before you start your AMA.

Comment on local threads that have nothing to do with pets. They could be about road construction, restaurant recommendations, the weather, etc. You live there. Act like the local you are.

Answer pet questions when they come up naturally without pitching. If someone asks about a limping dog, you give a helpful, general answer and sign off. No clinic link. That restraint is what earns you the AMA later.

Aim for a few hundred comment karma. It accumulates faster than you’d think when you’re actually being useful.

Bonus Tip: There are great threads nationally for veterinary commentary from real people. Here are a few:

Step 4: Message the Moderators First

Screenshot showing where to connect with mods on a local subreddit

Ask permission to run an AMA in the local subreddit. It costs you one message and dramatically improves your odds of not having the AMA removed. Go to the subreddit, find “Message moderators” in the sidebar on desktop or tap the three dots on mobile, and send something short and direct.

“Hi mods, I’m a veterinarian at [Practice] here in [City]. I’ve been a member here for about a month. Summer is tick season, and I see the same questions come up a lot, so I’d like to host an AMA to answer general pet health questions from the community for free. Happy to follow whatever format or timing you prefer, and I won’t be linking to my clinic in the post. Is this something you’d be open to? Would you want me to schedule it for a specific day?”

Most mod teams respond within a few days. Some will approve it, some will ask you to post it in a specific thread, some will offer to flair it as “AMA” so it gets visibility. Occasionally one will say no, and that’s the answer. Move on to the neighboring sub.

Getting mod buy-in means your post won’t get auto-removed by a filter, which is what usually stops AMAs before anyone sees them.

Step 5: Write the AMA Post

How to Write a Title

I’m a veterinarian in [City]. It’s allergy season and I’ll answer any pet health question you’ve got. AMA.

Specific beats clever. A reason for the timing (“allergy season” “tick season,” “post-holiday chocolate calls,” “wildfire smoke and your pets”) gives pet owners a reason to click today instead of scrolling past.

What to Put in the Body

  • Who You Are: name, credentials, years in practice, where you practice
  • Your Disclosure: “I own [Practice] on [Street]. I’m not here to sell anything, mods approved this, and I’m not going to link my website. Ask me whatever.”
  • What You Can Help With: nutrition, vaccine schedules, dental, senior care, cost questions, what an emergency actually looks like at 2 a.m.
  • When You’ll Be Answering: “I’m here from 7 to 9 tonight and I’ll circle back tomorrow morning for anything I missed.”

You can't diagnose a specific pet over the internet.

Make it known that in-person visits at a veterinary clinic are always preferred. Just like you won’t do surgery virtually, you’ll also not diagnose someone’s pet via Reddit.

Deciding the Timing

Weeknight evenings between 6 and 9 p.m. local time or Sunday mid-morning are typically going to get the best traction for a Reddit AMA. Post at the start of your window, not before it.

Step 6: Run Your Veterinary AMA

The AMA is two hours of typing. You want to be hyper-responsive for the time you say you’ll be there. There is a flywheel effect to your work at this stage.

Answer everything, including the boring questions.

The person asking why their cat throws up after eating fast is a future client. So is the person reading that answer six months from now.

Give real answers.

Vague, liability-hedged non-answers are worse than not showing up. You can be substantive and still be careful.

Say the thing you'd say in the exam room about cost.

Reddit will ask you why veterinary care is expensive. Answer honestly. That question is a gift, and a straight answer about equipment, staffing, and emergency coverage does improve your reputation.

Never diagnose a specific animal.

This is the line. Redirect clearly: “That could be a few different things, and I’d be guessing without hands on him. If he’s still not eating tomorrow, get him seen, and if he’s lethargic or his gums look pale, go tonight.” You’re being helpful and staying inside the bounds of a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship. Say so plainly, and people respect it.

Do not pitch your veterinary practice.

Not once. If somebody asks where you practice, answer the question and move on. Maybe someone else in the thread will recommend you, and that recommendation is worth ten times what your own would be. Maybe they won’t, and you still did a good deed.

Handle the cranky ones with grace.

Somebody will bring up a bad experience at a different clinic, or accuse veterinarians of upselling. Respond calmly and take it seriously. The audience is watching how you handle the situation more than what you say. They may also ask a question about the quality of medicine or for a second opinion on another vet’s advice. Handle with grace.

Step 7: Measure Whether the AMA Worked

You will not get a clean conversion number out of your AMA, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Here’s what you can actually track:

  • Direct traffic and branded search: Watch for an increase in people searching your practice name in the days and weeks after. We call that “branded search,” and it’s easily measured with proper web analytics setup.
  • New client intake question: Add “Reddit” to your “how did you hear about us?” options for the next 90 days.
  • Call volume the following four weeks: Compare it to the prior four-week average and last year’s same period.
  • Search ranking: In around three months, search “vet [your city]” and see whether the AMA thread surfaces. If it doesn’t, don’t worry. Search terms don’t show the same result for the same search for everyone.
  • Mentions: Set a monthly reminder to search your practice name on Reddit and see whether people are recommending you unprompted.

Step 8: Keep Showing Up

One AMA is a nice afternoon. A veterinarian who is a known, useful presence in the city sub is a durable local marketing advantage that no competitor can buy their way past.

Stay in the sub. Answer pet questions when they come up. Do another AMA in six months tied to a different season. When the “need a vet rec” post appears (and it does almost every year), the audience of frequent commentators will remember the nice DVM who answered their questions.

Where the AMA Fits in Local Veterinary Marketing

Reddit isn’t a replacement for search ads, a fast website, or a Google Business Profile that’s actually filled out. It’s another option to build trust with consistency. Pet owners compare options across search, reviews, social, and word of mouth, and they can decide fast. Reddit is where word of mouth happens in writing, and where Google can index it and AI tools can quote it.

Vetcelerator offers locally targeted marketing for veterinary practices, from ads and SEO to websites and social posting, so the visibility you earn turns into booked appointments instead of just traffic.

Author's Note

I have been anonymously posting on Reddit for over a year. I do not plug Vetcelerator; I just try to be generally helpful to the Reddit veterinary community. I find that the subreddit threads help me understand the industry pulse and make me feel more connected to the space. While this hasn’t directly grown our national business, this strategy works even better for hyper-local businesses (like yours) so I made this guide from my experience. Also, if you can figure out who I am from my handle, I’ll be genuinely impressed, as I do not use my name.
